The ancient art of "drag racing" appears to have come into its own with the recent series of meets being conducted weekly on abandoned airstrip runwavs. With the semi-controlled running of these events, popularity of this sport has reached a new high.

Drag racing is rapidly becoming an organized endeavor which is providing "off the highway" activity for hot rod enthusiasts and may prove to be the answer to eliminating illegal street racing. The main factor in their favor is that the events can be run in comparatively short distances and do not require large areas for successful operation. A stretch of level road or runway barely more than one half mile in length can allow ample space for running with plenty of safe stopping distance.

Although it is possible to obtain high speeds in a quarter-mile dash, this, nevertheless, need not be a hazardous or dangerous sport. Conducted under proper operation and control, the events can provide a safe outlet for the urge for speed and action, and will supply many hours of excitement for spectator interest.
Thornwood is Goodland’s wild child little sibling. While Goodland graduated college, got a 9 to 5 and bought a house in the suburbs, Thornwood joined a motorcycle club and races dragsters out by the airport after midnight.
But when you look past its tough, aggressive center spikes, you’ll see Thornwood is actually a bit of a softie, with its subtly rounded corners.
