Hellafine

Haight-Ashbury is a district of San Francisco, named for the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets. During the 1967 Summer of Love, as psychedelic rock music was entering the mainstream, local Haight bands such as the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane and Country Joe and The Fish were elevated to national stardom. Media interest in the hippie subculture exposed the Haight-Ashbury district to enormous attention and popularized the counterculture movement across the country and around the world. But Haight-Ashbury could not accommodate this rapid influx of people, and the neighborhood scene quickly deteriorated, as overcrowding, homelessness, hunger, drug problems, and crime afflicted the neighborhood.

Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Milk moved to San Francisco in 1972 and opened a camera store in the Castro, a neighborhood that was experiencing a mass immigration of gay men and lesbians, eventually dubbing himself the "Mayor of Castro Street". Due to his growing popularity, he led the gay rights movement in battles against anti-gay initiatives. Milk was elected city supervisor in 1977 after San Francisco began to choose neighborhood representatives rather than city-wide ones. During Milk's almost eleven months in office, he sponsored a bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations, housing, and employment.

The San Francisco 49ers were founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference, and joined the NFL in 1949 when the two leagues merged. After years of mediocrity in the 1970s, Bill Walsh was hired to be the 49ers head coach for the 1978 season. Walsh invented what came to be known the 'West Coast offense', which is extremely difficult to defend against, as it is content to make carefully timed 6–8-yard passing plays all the way down the field to set up longer throws. The 49ers won five Super Bowl championships between 1981 and 1994, led by Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, Charles Haley and Fred Dean.
