George Powell studied engineering at Stanford University and started making homemade skateboards in 1957. In 1974, Powell's son asked for a skateboard. When Powell pulled an old one out of the garage, his son complained it did not ride smoothly. Powell realized softer urethane wheels would improve a skateboard's ride, so he bought urethane and baked his own wheels. He also used new materials like aluminum and fiberglass to fabricate composite boards. One of the test riders of one of his flexible slalom boards was Stacy Peralta. When Powell was laid off from his job in the aerospace industry, he moved from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara to start his own skateboard manufacturing business. In 1978, Powell teamed up with Stacy Peralta to form Powell Peralta. They created a skateboarding team, featuring the era's top competitors, including Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullin and Tony Hawk. Their “Bones Brigade" videos became some of the most influential skateboarding videos of the 1980s.

A guitar pickup is a mix of magnets and wire that converts the vibration of metal strings into an electronic signal. Seems simple, but the slightest adjustment of those ingredients can drastically alter the sound, or tone, of the guitar. Seymour Duncan made his name in the 1960s fixing and building pickups for the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. In the 1970s, he opened a factory in Goleta, and his namesake company now produces thousands of guitar pickups a year for the likes of Slash, Brad Paisley, Lari Basilio and anyone else in search of the ideal tone from their guitar.

The Hamburger Habit opened in November 1969, in Goleta, California. In 1980, long-time employees Brent and Bruce Reichard purchased the business. They opened a second location in Ventura in 1997, and gradually expanded around Southern California. There are now over 300 Habit Burger Grill restaurants in locations around the world. The Habit's "Charburger" was named the best burger in America by Consumer Reports, scoring an 8.1 out of 10 in a survey of 53,745 participants.
