Hawaiians & Pacific islanders had been surfing for a thousand years or more. The first people to ever surf California waves were three Hawaiian princes who were attending a military academy near Santa Cruz in the 1880s. While on a hike, they spotted a nice break, chopped down some redwoods and built boards.

The next person to surf California was George Freeth, a half-Hawaiian half-Brit who visited Southern California in 1907. Within days, he was drawing crowds to watch him surf. Newspapers called him "the man who walks on water". Another hawaiian, Duke Kahanamoku, won Olympic swimming medals in the 1920s, and then toured America and Australia displaying his swimming and surfing skills. Both George and Duke also made the national headlines for rescuing capsized boats of fishermen using surfboards, which turned surfboards into standard lifeguard equipment.

Americans were aware of surfing, but it was not yet a sport that most people could pick up… literally. The boards were made of solid wood and weighed over a hundred pounds! But a Wisconsin kid named Tom Blake would change that. Inspired by his hero Duke who he'd met on the tour, Tom took off for California and began building surfboards. He came up with a way to build a board with strips of wood that formed ribs and a spine like airplane wings, then covered with a thin veneer and sealed. This cut the weight in half or more.

Tom patented his design in 1931, but didn't keep it to himself. He taught classes on board building, and wrote articles for magazines, complete with blueprints. Blake also invented a waterproof camera case, which brought the viewer from the shore into the water. His pictures appeared in National Geographic, which would inspire the next wave of surfers to take pictures and movies of their surf exploits.

Blake provided one more important blueprint -- that of the SURFER DUDE. He embodied the lifestyle. He lived barebones, in harmony with nature, constantly traveling, inventing, and sharing what he learned.
