Nine vintage surf posters with Paradise Point
To countdown the final days of the Paradise Point introductory sale upon its launch, I re-created nine classic surf posters using the many weights and widths of the font, along with some swell surf pix by Swell Type’s Forest Dempsey.
1. “Surf Fever”, 1960
Director John Severson designed his movie's posters in a wacky, handwritten style.
2. “Surf Mania”, 1960
I love the transparent overprinted two-ink look so many of these old posters had.
3. “Surfing Hollow Days”, 1962
The original design was printed in different color combos at different locations. Each is distinctly cool!
4. “The Angry Sea”, 1962
Legendary psychedelic rock poster artist Rick Griffin worked for John while fresh out of high school. This poster has some of the Victorian type elements that would become a big influence on Rick’s late-1960s rock posters. Perhaps he had a hand in it? I couldn't find a definite answer one way or the other.
5. “Locked In!”, 1964
This 1964 Bud Browne poster has a wacky mix of mechanical type, again with the two color printing style.
6. “Water Logged”, 1963
The drawing of me top right is by comic book artist Moritat, sent as a gift after I spent a late night assembling his graphic novel Solstice in the mid-aughts.
7. “Spinning Boards”, 1961
“You gonna be plenty sorry if you miss this one…” Based on Rick Griffin's fantastic “Spinning Boards” poster for Bud Browne’s 1961 movie. There’s no way to completely capture Rick’s manic energy with type, but I sure had fun trying!
8. “Surf Classics”, 1964
A rare full-color poster for this John Severson flick.
9. “Endless Summer”, 1964
And of course the finale had to be this, perhaps the most iconic surf poster of all time!
Bruce Brown's 1964 release was also the first surf movie that became a hit in movie theaters worldwide. Coincidence? I think not!
